Jack and Cate Update -- October, 2008

Wednesday, October 8, 2008

Sometimes life is just plain hard when you ride the neighbors tricycle down the hill and you have to haul it up by yourself.

Then he realized I had my camera, and all was well in the world again...

And one more for good measure...

Mary and Francie had a party the Saturday before Halloween: Cate was a cat; Jack was Boba Fett; Lisa was a witch; and I was Jango Fett. In a game-time decision, Lisa and I traded costumes, so she was Jango Fett and I was the witch.

On a related note, some of our friends have really shallow definitions of "beauty."

We were invited to a Halloween party/trick-or-treating at a friend's house on Swiss Avenue. Fifteen minutes before we were to leave, Jack announced that he was no longer going as Boba Fett but was instead going as "Nerdy Billy." Fifteen minutes and a pair of my old horn-rimmed glasses later, and he was Nerdy Billy.

This was a huge Halloween for us. Jack was now willing to boldly go where he'd never gone before: trick-or-treating.

You gotta admit that these kids really know how to sell their characters...

Our friends' party was undeniably over-the-top. Every fifteen minutes, the "phantom" played the pipe orgain in the balcony over their front porch. By 7 PM, they had about 100 kids lined up for candy at their house, and that wouldn't disapate by 9 PM when we left. Each year, they hand out about between 7,000 and 9,000 pieces of candy.

When we got home at 9 PM, our bowl of candy was sitting unmolested on the front porch. In the ten minutes it took to visit the Watkins, Adams, and Fruits, however, our sole trick-or-treater for the evening absconded with all the candy.

One more photo highlighting the full-on fire and smoke effects. Jack didn't appreciate the phantom's show the first couple of times, but then he too got into the swing of things.

The kids did great this year. While it was still light, the four of us trick-or-treated for about a block up Swiss Avenue before Jack headed back to the party. Cate and I, however, went all the way to La Vista (about three blocks) working both sides of the street. A few costumes really scared her, but she squeezed my hand and hurried by each time.

After dark, a group of kids went trick-or-treating again, and both Jack and Cate joined in the fun. We made it a couple of blocks before Jack decided (in no uncertain terms) that it would be prudent to head back to the party.
