Here's a list of musicals I've seen -- I know some shows must be missing, but I think I've got most of them.  Musicals I'd recommend are listed in bold.  I wrote this list in 2003, so many of the shows are a bit murky and I have trouble providing a definitive thumbs-up or -down.

Cate joined me on a business trip to New York.  Performed at the Richard Rodgers Theatre – we stayed next door at the Marriott Marquis.  It absolutely blew us away, and I think we'll remember this trip for the rest of our lives.
The Book of Mormon

2011
Yes
With Jack resting comfortably in the hospital apparently recovering from a kidney stone, I took my mom to the Winspear Opera House.  Ryan Bondy played Elder Price, and his facial expressions strongly reminded me of Jim Carrey.

While the entire family was in New York City.  It was across the street from our hotel at the Nederlander Theatre.

Shrek the Musical
10.2.2010
2008
No
Cute and funny in an off-beat sort of way, but it's not especially memorable.  Grandma Irene and I took the train to the Music Hall since it was the day of the Texas-OU game.
Dreamgirls
7.10.2010
1981

The reviews were phenomenal, but I found it overly long.  Maybe I was in a bad mood...

The Atwoods graciously gave us their tickets so we could go as a family on a Sunday matinee.  Somewhat to my surprise, the show was fun and entertaining.  As expected, Cate enjoyed the show and Jack tolerated it.
Mamma Mia!
8.22.2009
1999

I've recommended this show a couple of times, but this version didn't live up to expectations.  Still fun, but the lead's voice and performance was uneven and distracting.
Legally Blonde
8.1.2009
2007
No
A "cute" show – this is an example of damning praise.  We enjoyed the show because it was funny and fun, but it's not one we'd highly recommend or would be anxious to see again.
A Chorus Line

1975
Yes
Always a good show.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
7.5.2009

We switched our tickets to the Sunday matinee show.  We had planned to go as a family, but both Jack and Lisa decided they were too tired and preferred to stay at home.  Cate and I had a wonderful time and really enjoyed the show.
The Wizard of Oz
6.21.2009
2007
No
We took the kids to a Sunday matinee show.  Perhaps not surprisingly, Cate loved it and Jack tolerated it.
The Drowsy Chaperone
6.6.2009
2005
Yes
Since the kids have become obsessed with the soundtrack, we took them to see the show at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center (Chapman Music Hall).   While Jack had trouble focusing for the entire show, Cate loved every minute.

2009
No
Happy Days?  False advertising.
The Color Purple
10.4.2008
2005
Maybe
It's a good show with a lot of varied music, but it's not one I'd kill to see again.  Lisa missed it because she had a wedding at church and didn't want to fight the State Fair traffic and parking to join us.
Jersey Boys
8.2.2008

Yes
Great story and great music.  Even with all the accolades, I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did.

Yes
Not as good as the original cast but still highly, highly recommended.
Ring of Fire
5.17.2008

The music was fine, but there was no story connecting them together.  There were a few Johnny Cash favorites but many more were passed over.
Rain:  The Beatles Experience
5.3.2008
1979
Maybe
Actually a concert rather than a musical, but the performers did an amazing job playing each of the Beatles.
The Wedding Singer
4.26.2008
2006
Maybe
The musical is built around references to the 1980's.  It was entertaining and fun, but not a show I'd see again.
Sweet Charity
7.28.2007
1966
No
Page Davis was surprisingly good in the title role, but both acts seemed to drag a little long.  Also, I think both Lisa and I were tired from a long week, and that certainly doesn't help our artistic appreciation.
Spamalot
6.23.2007
2005
Yes
As funny and good as on Broadway.  The woman they pulled from the audience was much more reluctant to participate.
Chicago
6.9.2007
1975
Yes
With Lisa Rinna as Roxie and Tom Wopat as Billy Flynn.  As usual, they weren't as strong as the cast around them, but still very good.
Camelot
5.26.2007

With the "incomparable" Michael York (who spoke as much as sang his part).  Next time, we will Camenot.
Wicked
4.21.2007
2003
Yes
Not quite as good as the first time around, but still loads of fun.  Victoria Matlock played Elphaba and Christina DeCicco played Galinda
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
11.28.2006

As much comedy show as musical.  Fun and funny with four people from the audience spelling with the cast members.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
10.7.2006
2005

2004
No
Definitely good, but it didn't blow me away.  Others loved it...
Spamalot!
7.18.2006
2005
Yes
When the show opened with the same scene as the movie, I was worried we were in for a long night of simply rehashing the original material.  I needn't have worried.  The music was original and funny.  Truly light musical fare, but it certainly lived up to its impressive reputation.  It rained cats-and-dogs after the show, and I had to abandone my plans to take a take a taxi back to the hotel near the World Trade Center site.  Instead, I had to find and take a subway downtown.  I was soaked to the core.
Mamma Mia!
7.8.2006
1999
Yes
At least as much fun the second time around as it was the first.  Simply fun and highly recommended.  An understudy, Anne Tolpegin, starred as Donna and had a great performance
Bombay Dreams
6.10.2006
2004

Beautiful costumes and a song Karen and Lisa were humming on the way out of the theater.  A good show but not one I'm dying to see again

2005
No
With Maureen McGovern as Marmee.
The Drowsy Chaperone
5.16.2006
2005
Yes
At the Marquis Theatre in New York with Sutton Foster.  It is uniquely set as a modern-day fan listening to his favorite 1920's musical and poking fun at musicals along the way.  Highly, highly recommended.  (The day we saw the show, it was nominated for 13 Tony awards)
Wicked
10.8.2005
2003
Yes
Easily the best show of the year.  Stephanie J. Block as Elphaba was an obvious standout.  It should be noted, however, that she flashed a downward-facing hook 'em horns as the curtain dropped (Texas beat Oklahoma 45-12 earlier in the day)
Movin' On
7.16.2005

No
The show features Billy Joel songs (performed on-stage) with Twyla Tharpe coreagraphed dance.  A good show that really came on strong at the end.  I suspect I would've liked it a lot more if I knew more of the songs.
The Producers
6.11.2005

Yes
Although all the hype set our expectations quite high, The Producers easily exceeded them.  Consistently hilarious and offensive to all.
Peter Pan
5.28.2005

No
With Cathy Rigby in the title role.  We should have followed our initial instinct of skipping the show for another drink and conversation at The Angry Dog.
Hairspray
3.19.2005
2002
Yes
Feel-good fun.  There's a serious message under all the frivolity, but it doesn't get in the way of good musical comedy.
Jesus Christ Superstar
10.16.2004
1971

A great show -- the best of the season and a big surprise.  All the singing and dialog was also signed for the deaf.
The King and I
7.3.2004
1951
Maybe
Starred Sandy Duncan.  A Rodgers and Hammerstein classic that's worth seeing, but I'm not sure it's one I need to see over and over.  We last saw it during the Dallas Summer Musicals 1997 season.
Yankee Doodle Dandy!
6.23.2004
